Adobe Media Encoder Mp4

I have some MKV rips I'd like to compress using AME, but for some reason it can't read MKV files. Is there a reason for this?

Most of the time I can just rename a .mkv file to .mp4 and it works fine since the extensions are just containers which made me think, what is the difference between mkv and mp4? I know they both support multiple audio tracks and subtitle tracks. Does it support multiple video tracks? If it does then I see no difference between the two.

I'm also having a new problem where for some reason whenever i click on a video file it says 'could not be imported. could not read from source'

I've done some testing and this is what I've figured out. I can't rename a file from mkv to mp4 for it to work. AME sees the file but won't import it which is really weird because I have no idea why it's doing this. So if a simple file renaming wont work what about a transcoding? I used handbrake and reencoded 2 files. One was originally an MP4, the other was originally an MKV. When using the handbrake the only setting I changed was switching the container from mkv to mp4 or vice versa. If the output was mkv, I renamed it to mp4 so AME would at least see it and then try to import them. Here are the results.

For some reason AME only works with files that were CREATED as MP4, I can't just simply change the file extension. Unless there is an issue with my settings or something else, AME is absolutely terrible in terms of compatibility. It's sad that it doesn't even see mkv files but that would be an easy fix if it at least worked after renaming them.

NOTE: The encoding should've taken care of any issues with video or audio codec (they were both AVC, AAC anyways)

The only option I can think of right now is remuxing the files from mkv to mp4 but the tool i've been using is mkvtoolnix. I'd have to find one that creates mp4's instead.

Do you guys have any idea on how to fix or work around this?
